    Usually I just remove the bolt assembly, pull the cotter key, remove the bolt and clean it with Break Free.

    About that cotter key, any of you guys have a trick for getting it back in. The ends are just the slightest bit spread and last time I put it back in, I got an assist from my little pocket knife (used it to push the end on the cotter pin toward the other side.)

    Last thing I do is run a bore snake through the barrel.

    Many of you know that my AR is basically brand new and I've only put around 5-600 of .223 (no 5.56, even though it is chambered for 5.56))rounds through it so far. I haven't done a "big-time" cleaning of it.

    Try turning the carrier over and using a small punch to push the two sides of the pin together while applying pressure from outside to push it through.

    I'm thinking that's how I used my little pocket knife. I'll try a punch next time.

    Thanks

    My formula;
    Pistols 200-400rds.
    Carbine AR's 500-800 or if accuracy drops.
    Precision AR Not till accuracy falls.
    Bolt guns Not till accuracy falls or hunt /match season is over.
    Takes between 50-150rds to get back to the groove unless you use gun juice. With it sometimes a few as 20-50.
