    Default OC vs CC

Open Carry vs Concealed Carry; which do you prefer and why?

It was a huge topic on the trader and wanted to see what ya'll thought, and hopefully have a more civil debate rather than the cluster f!ck over there.

I'll start off with first saying we're all here for our mutual love and respect of all things firearms. I really could care less of anyone's convictions one way or the other (that came off rude, which is not my intention), so long that you do believe in the right to legally bear arms. That being said I choose to Conceal Carry.

Unfortunately the general public has a fear of firearms which regrettably stems form their lack of knowledge. Although I'd rather open carry, I see it as causing more alarm then security among the unknowing public.

    Any other opinions?

Most of my carrying is done in the Athens area so I pretty much only CC. Don't need the hassle, especially downtown.

I OC probably 90% of the time. To be honest I don't give a rats rear if someone has an irrational fear of guns. Their mental disease isn't my problem. So far to date (since '95) the only encounters I have had were a couple questions asking if I was LE. My response was "no, I'm in personal security". This seemed to satisfy everyone so far. I even had a Macon detective come up to me and say he wished more people would do that. The very rare times I conceal I just untuck my shirt and let it hang over my pistol. IF it prints, oh well.

Funny story, I had a lady come up to me demanding that I would do something about the illegal aliens hanging around on the street corners. I told her they don't give me the authority to do anything. The owner of the store I was in told her I wasn't a cop. She just stormed off saying the she wished they would do something. Both Jay and I laughed after she left. Another time I was in my bank getting some papers notarized. I had spotted a no firearms sticker on the door before I walked in. There I was sitting in the branch managers office talking to her and I asked her about the decal. She told me some story about a guy who had come in a few weeks earlier kind of flaunting his pistol on his hip. I asked her if I need to return mine back to the truck. that was when she looked over at mine and "oh, I didn't even notice it. No don't bother". I find when you make eye contact with folks you encounter and you aren't fiddling with your holster most people won't even notice it.

really depends on where I'll be or what I'm doing, but most of the time It just depends on how I'm feeling at the time. If I do CC, it's just my shirt untucked over it, still prints, but never been asked about it. I will say that the local crack heads don't ask me for a dollar every time I get out at the gas station anymore.

might want to check this out:

Police Harass, Threaten to Shoot Man Legally Carrying Gun

    FOXBusiness - by John Stossel - May 16, 2011

A story in today's Philadelphia Daily News shows why it's so important that citizens be allowed to videotape cops - it can be citizens' only way to fight back against police abuse of power.

This incident happened several weeks ago in Philadelphia to Mark Fiorino, a 25-year-old IT worker who carries a gun on his hip at all times for self defense. He got the gun after several friends were mugged.

But he didn't count on attacks by police:

On a mild February afternoon, Fiorino, 25, decided to walk to an AutoZone on Frankford Avenue in Northeast Philly with the .40-caliber Glock he legally owns holstered in plain view on his left hip. His stroll ended when someone called out from behind: "Yo, Junior, what are you doing?"

Fiorino wheeled and saw Sgt. Michael Dougherty aiming a handgun at him.

What happened next would be hard to believe, except that Fiorino audio-recorded all of it: a tense, profanity-laced, 40-minute encounter with cops who told him that what he was doing - openly carrying a gun on the city's streets - was against the law.

"Do you know you can't openly carry here in Philadelphia?" Dougherty asked, according to the YouTube clip. YouTube - ‪SHOCKING AUDIO: Philadelphia Police violate rights of open carrier at gunpoint‬‏

"Yes, you can, if you have a license to carry firearms," Fiorino said. "It's Directive 137. It's your own internal directive."

This is a frightening story of what can happen when a law officer is not informed of the laws on carrying. Unfortunately, this story plays out several times a day in this country. Not blaming the law officer, it is not their fault that they are not always afforded the training they need in order to do their jobs. However, not excusing this officer for his less than stellar use of the English language when addressing this citizen as well.
