Stag, Rock River Arms, Bushmaster, CMMG, and even DPMS are good middle-of-the-road AR's. Building an AR off of a stripped lower is easy and fun to do.
Even if you just put a lower together, it is no chore to find used uppers at good prices.

If your just wanting a plinking rifle. Go with a .22 ar. I have a spikes and it's just fun.
If not hunting or wanting a man stopper, dont go with the 6.8, the rounds are pretty expensive right now. If you do decide to go with a 6.8, go to 68forums.com and research. There is actually a pretty big differance with the companies making the rifles.
I have 5 calibers in the ar platform, and the most i shoot is the .22 and 5.56.
psdiver102 is right, the 6.8 is a very cool round but the ammo is very pricey and harder to find these days. I love my 5.56 rifles but the best "just for plinking" ar is the 22. You will love it. If youwant both just buy the 200 dollar conversion 22 from spikes and use it in a stock 223 ar from _____________ manufacturer. They all work and unless your going to war or going to put the rifle through its paces any of them will be fine. My go to rifle is a RRA and its a great rifle, I also have a bushy thats a great rifle. They all do there job.
