This is a project I started about ten years ago but didn't get finished. It is pretty complex, and we ended up moving so it never got finished. Figured this winter was the perfect time to try and finish it. It is made from 100 year old walnut I found in southern Illinois. Most of the base pieces started as 2-3" planks. I used many of Sam Maloof's (Sam Maloof Woodworking) techniques, but of course I'm no where near as skilled (in fact, I suck and have to improvise all the time!)
Anyway, the runners are made of 1/4" slats I hand cut on the bandsaw I recently sold and include maple accents. I glued them and used a template I constructed to give them the shape.
I've got the main frame glued together, but as you can see, that is just the beginning. I have a huge amount of shaping yet to go before it is done. It will be a heavier piece that what Sam Maloof constructs, but still a heck of a piece.
