    Default Fire starters

Anyone tried DIY firestarters of any kind. I've been playing around with different stuff, just want to see if there's any new ideas?

I want to do something with fire steel and paracord. I know it's not new but, I still want to do some.

    yep lots of them!
    ice and bone
    condom and water
    chocolate and tin can
    9v battery and steel wool

    then the boring ways:
    fire steel
    swedish steel
    blast match (best by far)
    bow-drill

oh yea I have also used matches, and a lighter....

we were sitting on a frozen lake with no shelter, -40, and an extremely strong wind. had to build a snow break to stop the wind to get it started.

this was all by choice too we were ice fishing in northern Sweden, and just to claify we were only a couple hundred feet from our car. I didn't believe it was possible so my brother in law showed me. we were talking about different ways to start a fire.

fire from Ice was kinda cool, I also found that suffing a paper towel tube full of vasoline and cotton balls, then cut into 1.5" sections and wax coating both ends makes an awesome little waterproof fire log, and burns about 11 mins with a good size flame. I guess about the same thing as the old egg carton firelogs. I'll probably end up just taking a ziplock bag with some vasoline soaked cotton balls.

it's pretty easy and light to take some cotton balls and smear in some vasoline in a small zip lock back. they rally catch the spark from fire steel or blast matches and take a while to burn. gives you lots of time to get your tender bundle ready.

also have you ever tried a fire piston? I don't have one yet but really want to get one to try out.

pretty much every time we go backpacking we try to find some new way of starting a fire. it is nice to sit down after a few hours of hiking that day.
